What is the difference between isolate, full spectrum, & broad spectrum extracts?
- Isolate- Pure CBD Powder
- Broad Spectrum- CBD extracted from the cannabis plant along with other phytocannabinoids, except THC and terpenes.
- Full Spectrum- Hemp extract that contains all or nearly all of the compounds naturally present in the hemp plant, including terpenes and THC.
What does this mean for you?
As a general consumer, we caution you against full spectrum products if there is any chance that you will need to pass a drug screen. Full spectrum products should contain less than the legal limit of THC, however in a 2017 JAMA study nearly 70% of CBD products sold online were mislabeled, and of the products they tested the average THC concentration was 450 ng/mL. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) the recommended cutoff level of THC is 50 ng/mL to pass a urine drug analysis. Meaning if you don’t know where your full spectrum product is coming from, don’t buy it! It may end up costing you in more ways than one.
Broad spectrum products are more preferred for the general population when compared to full spectrum. If done correctly, manufacturers remove any trace of THC from the products allowing consumers greater piece of mind from a safety standpoint. Broad spectrum extracts can heavily vary however, depending on which plant genetics and extraction process the manufactures chooses to utilize. This is why brands who source broad spectrum products have to be extremely careful to ensure their customers are receiving consistent effects from their products.
CBD isolate is a very reliable product. Usually manufactured and sold in large quantities ensures that consumers consistently receive the same dose and desired effect. Isolate products are a great starting point to gauge how your endocannabinoid system will respond when introduced to phytocannabinoids.
